Brazil Favela Tour Continued...

One of the other famous favelas in Rio de Janeiro is the Santa Marta slum, once the occupation of military force. It’s also the steepest community in the city, so you’ll get a workout in addition to a tour! Plus, the views just can’t be beat from up there. In 2008, the control of Santa Marta was turned to civil police forces and the favela became known internationally, especially when Michael Jackson recorded part of the clip for “They Don’t Care About Us” there. Now there’s a statue dedicated to him.

There’s also the Vidigal favela, which often shows up in movies and Brazilian documentaries for its beauty and privileged location next to the beach. Like Santa Marta, this slum is perched precariously hillside, and has a long history of drug wars and eviction threats. Your guide will lead you through this favela while giving you a history lesson. Like many other favelas, this is a rapidly changing community where you’ll find everything from speedy motorbike taxis to new ecological parks. Many migrant workers make up the majority of these inhabitants, and it’s important to take the time to learn their story.

Brazilian favelas can be a harsh reality to some, but they’re an important and engrained part of Brazilian culture, and it’s important to show the utmost respect while visiting! Hiring a local favela guide will teach you the ropes.
