At the Prado museum in Madrid we hired a guide for a three-hour tour. In that time we only visited four paintings but the guide turned each into such an incredible story that we were enthralled. I vowed to always hire tour guides after that.
I found myself in Cambodia unexpectedly for a week. When I landed, I decided to hire a guide to help me explore the country. He agreed but said we’d have to visit his mom at one point. Turns out his mother is a monk and it was her 90th birthday. I was invited to attend the celebrations, which were held at a beautiful monastery in the mountains. That day, and that guide, made my trip.

My dad was a fishing guide in the Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwaii) – he was a really social guy and totally loved his job. He’d get so excited when someone in his boat reeled in a big fish. Their stories became his stories. I grew up understanding the value of a great guide.

My daughter and I hired guides to go swimming with dolphins in the Sea of Cortez near Los Cabos, Mexico. When the head guide found out it was my daughter’s 14th birthday that day, he let us stay behind after the tour was over and as a special treat she got a chance to swim with the baby dolphins for another half hour. In that moment the guide transformed what was a fun tour into one of the best moments of her life. And mine.

Despite being inexperienced canoeists, my wife and I went on a trip around Bowron Lakes in British Columbia. With the help of a guide we explored terrain that we would never have felt comfortable in by ourselves including a river with a swampy area where we spotted a huge moose grazing. We paddled up close and our guide took a picture of us with it in the background. We love that pic! At the end of the trip, the guide handed me a fishing rod with a specific lure on it that he said couldn’t fail and, despite not having much fishing experience, I caught our dinner on the first cast. That was the perfect end to an amazing trip.
I usually do all the research for city trips myself - I like to learn a ton before I go and then meander around on my own, but if I were to ever venture far off the beaten path, say to trek in Nepal, or go deep in to the Amazon - I wouldn't consider going without a local guide. There are just so many things you wouldn't be able to see and do safely on your own that it doesn't make sense not to take advantage of everything guides can offer.

There are many well-known Robin Hood type "man of the people" stories about the infamous Pablo Escobar of Colombia. However, hearing a first-hand account of the devastating impacts of his criminal activities (and those of the cartels his actions spawned) - as described by an incredibly passionate guide in Medellin was heart-wrenching. It painted a completely different and truly impactful picture for me as we toured the city that is still recovering to this day from the drug lord's reign in the late 80s/90s.

While vacationing at an all-inclusive resort in Cuba, we decided to take a break and hired a guide to take us to Havana. In addition to showing us all the known hot-spots, our guide provided us with unique access to non-tourist locales, found us an amazing bed and breakfast with a rooftop patio and 360 degree views of the city, and got us access to a local nightclub with truly unique local personalities, live music and street magic. Our guide's local knowledge and ability to take us 'off the beaten path' was what made our Cuba vacation an unforgettable experience.

I've always been a pretty cautious person, and never really had the travel bug. However, since working for GuideAdvisor, I've seen such a variety of adventure and sightseeing tours that it actually makes me eager to get out and do it. Knowing that an experienced guide can help me get that thrill of adventure in a safe way has opened my eyes to a whole new realm of opportunity! I still won't be skydiving anytime soon though.

I've always enjoyed traveling, from the second I enter the airport until the moment I head home, it's all an exciting journey to me. More recently, I've started traveling with my little family and found that having a plan, whether a full-on itinerary or a loose structure to the day, can come in handy! Having a guide to help point out some family-friendly activities or to walk us through a new city is a definite plus. Traveling and experiencing something new with my family is still as enjoyable as ever.

I love to travel! Exploring new places and meeting new people should be a required course in school! I have several special places on my “someday travel to-do” list, which has expanded since I began working with GuideAdvisor. I also now have a deeper appreciation for all guides and the importance of their expertise. Whether it is a city tour or an adventure experience, I will always hire a guide!

My family and I hired a local tour guide to show us around on a visit to Matanzas, Cuba. He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly but it was when we made a surprise stop by his home, met his family and learned more about his life in Cuba, that made our trip a truly unforgettable experience.

While visiting Phuket, Thailand with my brother, I took a guided boat tour to the Phi Phi Islands. Our guide was one of the most entertaining people that I met while on vacation. He had a story to tell about every single place we visited and cracked jokes the entire day. He made the tour one of my fondest memories of Thailand.
